To Do List

Some things I want to do before our trip:

  • research train schedule
  • figure out power adapter situation
  • figure out our phone/data plan situation in Europe, i.e., can we use them
  • Can we move photos from  our camera to your iPad? Or should be buy a bigger data card for our camera
  • Buy new shoes
  • Discuss what we want to pack - jeans, nicer clothes, tennis shoes, nicer shoes, travel sized laundry detergent?
  • See if there's a hockey game we can see anywhere
  • Money issues - currency, transaction fees, credit cards, etc.

  1. So, both our phones will work in the 4 countries we plan to visit.

We can get the World Traveler package for $5.99 month. Summary below is country-per minute cost-per minute cost with World Traveler

    Austria $1.39 $0.99
    Czech Republic $2.29 $1.99
    Germany (airport) $1.39 $0.99
    Hungary $1.39 $0.99
    Slovakia $2.89 $1.99

So we can save big money in Bratislava!

If we pro-rate the plan for 2 weeks, that's $3 and we save 30-cents a minute, or it pays for it self with 10 minutes of talk time. Frankly, we'll probably have no more than 10 minutes of talk time. Probably worth it.

That's for both making and receiving calls while overseas.

  2. It's 40-cents per text message.

    We can get 50 texts for $10, 200 for $30, or 500 for $50.

I suggest we use wifi plus email to keep in contact with people at home, but we might want some protection in case one of our dumb friends texts us or we want to text each other.

  3. Data will essentially be $1 per MB. (Our current monthly plan is 200 MB).

We can get 50 MB for $25, 125 MB for $50 and up from there, but I don't see us going more than $50.

Again, best to utilize the wifi, but we might want protection in case we get lost and need to use a map, or just if our phone is automatically set to download stuff. Otherwise we might want to leave our phones in plane mode unless we're on a wifi network.

  4. Budapest, Vienna, and Prague are on 220 V.

The adapter we have will work.

Need to make sure all of our adapters run on 220V or 110V. We were fine in Scandinavia. I'll bet we're ok here, but I'll check.

  6. Our camera has an 8 GB memory card, which is something like 1500 photos on the highest resolution. More, if we reduce the resolution, so we should be good to go.

  7. There will be street sweeping May 29 and 30. We will not et be home. We can

    1) Park our car on Wolcott south of Wilson. That is a different "Zone" and won't be cleaned while we're gone.

    2) Ask Gilberto or Kristen to move the car for us on those days. I though we might want to ask one or both of them to keep an eye on our place/car while we're gone anyway.

    3) Park the car by Ek, Phil, or Julie's place.

Thoughts? I feel comfortable with Gilberto or Kristen.

I should have taken the train back last night, left the car in Algonquin for safe keeping.

  8. That's why I'm trying to figure out what account is best to use.

  9. I say we just go with ING, no?

  10. Probably. Just let me contact AmEx and my research will be complete.

Maybe it makes sense to use them for purchases and ING for cash.

Also, what if we run out of money in our ING account?
