More on Train Travel

Following up on this post, wanted to look at individual ticket costs so we can decide if there is a pass/passes that make sense. We can look at schedules most closely when we have a better itinerary. It looks as if we have at least 3 daily options for each of these routes.

All prices are for two tickets.

The Triangle Pass gets us from Budapest to Vienna and Vienna to Prague is $280. No reservations.

With reservations, our costs look like this:
  • Budapest to Vienna - $128
  • Vienna to Prague - $204
  • Prauge to Cesky Krumlov - $84
  • Cesky Krumlov to Prague - $84
Total cost is $500.

We also need to get from Vienna to Bratislava, but I assume there is some sort of commuter train, rather than  using the national railways.

The European East Pass covers unlimited travel on the national rail networks of Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Hungary. Valid for 5 travel days in 1 month. $490 for the two passes. No reservations.

It's $426 if we take Bratislava off the list.

Kinda seems like we should do the Triangle pass and book round trip for Prague to CK.

  1. Prague to CK isn't on a national rail network?

    1. I think it is. Not sure what you're getting at.

  2. Screw up #1. We never bought these passes and it's too late now. They have to be mailed to us.

We'll have to buy point to point tickets at the train stations. Probably not a huge deal, provided someone at the train station speaks english.

  3. According to the app we can buy online and print at a station or print at home which the home option isn't easy for us. I guess you could print at work today. This app is the Rail Europe app.

  4. In some countries, yes.

But not for the pass we want.

  5. There's a TFN. I'll call. Are we wanting to buy before we go?

  6. I talked to someone online, but feel free to call.

We also can't ship to our hotel in Budapest because shipping is 3-5 days, plus one day processing time.

Do you want to buy before we go?

I can only answer for me. I would have preferred it, but it only costs $50 (for both of us) to buy one way tickets from Budapest to Vienna and Vienna to Prague. That's with a reservation. The pass does not include reservations, so we'd have to pay extra for them. So, I'm find buying our tickets at the train station. We can always buy our tickets on Friday or Monday's train to make sure it doesn't sell out. There are also 3-4 trains per day, so if one sells out, we have other options.

Also, if it's going to cost a lot to get the tickets on short notice, doesn't seem worth it when it's only $50 more to buy point to point tickets.

We're only using 2 out of the 3 one way tickets included in the Triangle Pass, which is why it's not much of a cost savings. If we were going to Salzburg too, I'd be more concerned.

  7. It seems like you want to have reservations - with the research I've conducted. I could be wrong. So it might be better to buy there. So you found that it's 50 usd for both of us to get to vienna and then to Prague with reservations?

  8. The prices are all listed above.

Reservation/no reservation is kind of a moot point if we can't buy the Triangle Pass. So, can we still buy that?

My impression is NO, but you were going to call the toll free number.
