Itinerary

Here's how I see it. We want to be gone for two weeks. We want to see Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest. We might want to see Ceske Krumlov in the Czech Republic. Vienna and Bratislava are essentially one stop. We want to utilize the Memorial Day holiday as a day off. We probably want end our trip around Memorial Day to avoid peak season. We want to fly into Prague and out of Budapest. We want to take a boat from Vienna to Budapest on the Danube. We want to take trains everywhere else. So, with all that in mind, here's what I came up with.

We leave Tuesday, May 15, 2012. We return Tuesday, May 29, 2012.

That should be 13 nights, divided like so:

4 nights in Prague
2 nights in Ceske Krumlov
3 nights in Vienna/Bratislava
4 nights in Budapest

Obviously that can be tweaked, but I had to start somewhere.

If that's the case, our itinerary looks like this:

Leave Chicago on Tuesday, May 15, arrive in Prague on Wednesday May 16.
Wed. May 16: Prague
Thurs. May 17: Prague
Fri. May 18: Prague
Sat. May 19: Prague
Sun. May 20: Travel from Prague to Ceske Krumlov
Mon. May 21: Ceske Krumlov
Tues. May 22: Travel from Ceske Krumlov to Vienna
Wed. May 23: Vienna/Bratislava
Thurs. May 24: Vienna/Bratislava
Fri. May 25: Travel from Vienna to Budapest
Sat. May 26: Budapest
Sun. May 27: Budapest
Mon. May 28: Budapest
Tues. May 29: Fly home

However, it appears the hydrofoils from Vienna to Budapest only run Tuesday and Thursday. They run Budapest to Vienna on Monday and Wednesday.

Maybe there is another carrier. But if that's the case, we need to leave Monday, May 14. Or reverse the trip so it's Budapest, Vienna, Ceske Krumlov, and Prague.

It's the 2011 schedule, but I'm sure something similar is applicable to 2012

  2. Maybe. That link says "In cooperation with our Hungarian partner company Mahart PassNave we offer hydrofoil services to the capital of our neighbour to the east - Budapest."

Since DDSG Blue Danube doesn't have a 2012 schedule, I went straight to Mahart PassNave. Their schedule says this:

  3. Kind of confuses me, but probably something we should keep in mind.
